The New Zealand government have decided that it's time to rethink the NZ flag (so it's not always confused with the Aussie one) and honourably so, they're going to let the people of NZ to design and choose it.
This is a huge opportunity for Kiwis to make their mark - to put their name on the map, and to finally stand apart from those damn Aussies.
We thought we'd share some of our favourites... at least we know for sure that Microsoft Paint is still in common usage!
Welcome to China??
"This is a flag for the current, and future of NZ economic standings and foreign relations. It is a thing of beauty."
Think of the children
"It's really simply and easy to draw which would be great for children."

"It represents the majority of New Zealanders."

May need to work on placement of elements
"This flag combines the Southern Cross and colour scheme of our existing flag, with the rainbow design of the popular Nyan Cat meme. This design uses the Nyan Kiwi. The kiwi's colour represents our mixed race society, and its trail represents the colourful variety of cultures present in New Zealand society. The Nyan theme music could also be used as fresh, and simpler, national anthem."
"It represents kiwis, stars, and flags."

The important issues represented
"This design represents all of NZ because we have lots of sheep and love hokey pokey ice cream. I even included the blue and red to keep all of you naysayers happy. Kiwi as bro."

When in doubt, use Space Invaders
"It's time to take back our flag from Australia. This design captures that exact moment and our flag will never be confused with theirs ever again. The design will appeal to all New Zealanders who like beating Australia and/or people that came of age in the early 1980s, so that's quite a few of people."

"I would like the New Zealand flag to promote our Clean Green Environment."

A flag for the gluten-intolerant folk
"The yellow motif represents the golden sun, and the golden chips of this fair land. It's our British heritage, filling our hearts with pride and our tummy's with Kai. The Fish (Ika) represents the main source of food for Maori (after all the moa's had been scoffed up before the settlers arrived). We haven't battered the fish so this flag is safe for all the gluten free people too."

A design masterpiece
"The flag 'Long White Cloud With Silver Lining' symbolizes a positive way forward for Aotearoa."

Nothing says fresh like a stingray
"This is for the entire state. Restarting the traditional and make us new."

A flag to remind you of Big Brother
"Because no flags in the world incorporate the realism that flags could be. We are moving into a beautiful new age of the internet although it can be scary. The Cyber Taniwha is a merging of the past and the future, the myth and the digital to give us something that encompasses everything that New Zealand has been and everything it can be."

The face of a nation
"Because it portrays that we are a nation of happy, harmless kiwis."

Obvious, yet deep
"Black like the night that descends over the nation. Black like the void which keeps us apart."

If only others had used the motto: K.I.S.B.
"K.I.S.B Keep it simple Bro!, everyone has a blue sheet at home they can cut up, Bam! 12 flags from one sheet. We will have flag saturation! everyone can afford to fly one."

A message for the masses
"I think it would make a good flag of NZ because its yellow and is happy and it would really cheer people up."

A hidden meaning?
"It stands for the land, the sea and the people of NZ."

"Life is simply better when you surf. Surfing is an important part of the NZ lifestyle. The flag design is clean, simple and elegant. I like it."

A sheep that doubles as a long white cloud... genius
"I am delighted to present a flag that every New Zealander can agree to. It is recognisable globally and represents our green countryside, our clear blue skies, and the sheep doubles as a long white cloud. It also carries forward, tradition with the use of the star in place of the eye."
IMAGE: MICHAEL TUFFIN
Mad Paint skills bro
"I have used both traditional and new colours, plus the silver fern and the southern cross. The theme relates to our wild and different weather and natural beauty."

Paul rates his artwork
"It's just lovely."

Who wouldn't want this guy on the flag?
"This flag represents one of our national symbols. The Kiwi bird. The Kiwi is proudly standing in the center of the flag with two white bars on either side representing the Two islands and the Blue in the middle representing the oceans."

And These flags have led to this...
"NZ is divided. Some think we should have a new flag, some don't. There are the haves and the have nots. So this design is inclusive of all those people. It represents them all. It is a flag that people can unite behind because it represents their differences. It is also easy to recognise and easy for kids to draw."

Wow! We're such a talented bunch aren't we.
